thanks

September 17, 2020

Since reading aloud is one of the best things kids and grownups can do together, we send out a new story or chapter free each week. Don’t worry if you miss one! Complete stories are always available on our storyblog.
Heya <<First Name>>,

Bob and I just wanted to say thanks (again) for giving “Ooh Odd Zoo” a read.

The response has astonished us. Since we made the book available last month, it’s been downloaded more than 11,000 times.

We are completely over the moon thinking about all those quokkas, fossas, and yapoks roaming around in the world.

Coloring books and giraffediles

But what’s been infinitely more gratifying are the messages you’ve shared with us. So, thank you to …
  • Acacia, who turned “Ooh Odd Zoo” into a coloring book for her students (and suggested I do an audio recording of the book).
  • Johanna, who told us about the animal-naming game she’d play with her son when he was small (he got so good he could name 50 species of shark).
  • Zelda, age 6, who inspired a new poem last weekend when she invented a “giraffedile” (half-giraffe, half-crocodile).
  • And lots more.
Thanks to everyone who took the time to write to us. We hope you’re discovering lots of great stories to share with each other and that you’re able to find time to read aloud.

Stories are such good medicine, especially in this tumultuous year.

Happy reading,

PS. Part 3 of our current story, “The Island of Slippery Souls” is below. We’ll conclude it next week.

PPS. Don’t tell anyone, but there’s also a sneak preview below of the new story we’re launching soon.

The Island of Slippery Souls: Part 3

When we left off last week, Clara was setting off from her farm, determined to stop King Clench’s terrible plan. First stop: Stumbletown.

Clara’s beloved farm boots got a workout as she walked the peaceful miles into Stumbletown, the nearest port village. She passed farms in the full glory of morning. Rows of sunflowers turned their faces to the sun. Horses nickered in the fields. Honeysuckle flowers perfumed the pastures. Ants built tiny empires by the roadside. The sweet melody of life.

There was so much goodness in the world. Clara opened to it like a sunflower herself, body and soul. She drank in the world, and the world filled her with strength.

She would need it.

Coming in October …

We’re launching a story that’s VERY spooky (not really), VERY icky (it’s only a little icky), and VERY charming (yes, it IS charming). Get ready, if you dare …
