Good Reading aloud is good medicine

September 21, 2021

320 Sycamore Studios is a different kind of children’s book publisher. We share serialized stories via our weekly newsletter, host a read-aloud community, and offer free PDF versions of all the books we sell. Enjoy!
Heya <<First Name>>,

I’ve learned to be wary of conversations with my sister.

She’s a nurse and she’s completely brilliant (she’s currently pursuing a doctorate of nursing practice).

But she’s also got a deeply irreverent sense of humor. Like, she’ll call just to tell me what happens when you get bit by a Brazilian wandering spider.

Then she’ll text a picture of the spider. Without warning me.

I was going to include one here, but frankly, it’s Shelob-level scary.

Our professional worlds don’t overlap much, but last week she sent me a screenshot from the book “Bright Futures,” by the American Academy of Pediatrics.

Since that is really unappealing to read, I’ll share the key takeaway:

Reading aloud can enhance children’s social and emotional development while building brain circuits to prepare children to learn language and acquire early literacy skills.

I tell my sister how great this is, and that I’ll pass the message along.

Then I lower my guard. Big mistake.

“Hey,” she says. “Wanna know what happens to your feet if they stay damp too long?”

Noooooo.

Anyway …

Happy reading,

Jeff and Bob …

Ready for a new story?

“Moldylocks and the Bear” builds on the world created in “Scar and the Wolf,” with a new story and lots of new characters.

The book is, of course, a retelling of the “Goldilocks” fairy tale, but it’s told from the perspective of the most lovable zombie you’ll ever meet.

Follow Moldylocks LaMort as she trains for the part of the lead bear in “Grizzly Hair,” the town’s annual musical production. Moldy has fierce competition for the role from her arch-enemy, Jeminy Stinkpit. But maybe the new kid at school can help her achieve maximum levels of bearness.

He is, after all, a bear.

Read chapter 1: A Bear Bursts In.
